Animal Care

Following a BTEC Technical Qualification, students will complete three units of work:

Component 1 – Animal Handling

This unit comprises of three assessed tasks, two written essays and a handling task that will be videoed and assessed. Students will learn aspects of animal behaviour and how to safely handle a range of Animals.

Component 2 – Animal Housing

This unit comprises of three assessed tasks, two written essays and a practical task that will be videoed and assessed. Students will lean aspects of animal housing and look at the impact of design on wellbeing.

Component 3 – Animal Health

The unit is assessed by a written exam in January of the second year. This will include all aspects of animal health, fitness, disease and industry.

Overview of Animal Care Study:

The Skills for the Animal Care qualification are intended to provide learners with a broad introduction to the land-based sector and animal care, equipping learners with underpinning knowledge and skills specific to the sector alongside a range of transferable employability skills, for example health and safety. The course is designed to support progression to further learning and ultimately to work in the animal care sectors.

Pupils are aiming to learn all about how to care for, handle and restrain, house, assess the health and exercise animals safely as well as all the health and safety implications of working within the animal care industry.

Where does it lead?

After following the qualification in Animal Care students can go on to further their education at a college focusing on higher qualifications or students may also consider jobs and futures in the following areas:

  • Veterinary nursing
  • Animal management
  • Grooms and dog walking
  • Feeding and caring for animals
  • RSPCA
  • Animal behaviour

Following any of the Animal Care pathways will also allow students to develop their personal skills such as communication and time management.

This will form part of the essential skills for employment implemented at Maplewell Hall School.
