At Maplewell Hall School we believe in careful curriculum planning, which dynamically adheres to students’ needs, is the basis of solid student progress. We streamline this through three pathways which are outlined below, however this differs from year to year as we mould our curriculum to our specific cohort of students.
We have adapted the National Curriculum to create three ambitiously designed pathways of learning that are broad in content to allow students to study at level appropriate for their stage and go on to access nationally recognised qualifications. Our curriculum is progressive and flexible, supporting the needs of our students.
Retrieval practice plays are large role in our curriculum plan. Daily retrieval practice activities are used at the start of lessons to ensure students are continually recalling previously learnt content.
Students pathways at Post-16 in mathematics are determined by the qualifications they obtained in year 11.
Students will be assessed at the end of each topic of study on content taught throughout that topic. Students will also be assessed at the end of each full term on a mix of topics covered up to that point.
Assessments are used to gauge the level of understanding and to inform planning of the curriculum, as well as to ensure any necessary interventions are put in place to keep students on track within their pathway.
KS5
Students will be assigned to the pathway most suited to their ability. All pathways will continue to learn mathematical skills and knowledge that can be applied in life and work after school and all pathways lead to students having the skills and knowledge to access a nationally recognised qualification.
Pathway A
Students on this pathway will be further developing the mathematical knowledge that will be useful to them during and beyond their time in school. It is largely based on the use of number skills in real-life situations, in particular personal finance, planning and organising activities and the world of work. It also incorporates work on common measures and handling information and data. Students on this pathway can go on to sit the Functional Skills Level 2 qualification.

Pathway B
Students on this pathway will be further developing the mathematical skills and knowledge that will be useful to them during and beyond their time in school. It is largely based on the use of number skills in real-life situations, in particular personal finance, planning and organising activities and the world of work. It also incorporates work on common measures and handling information and data. Students on this pathway can go on to sit the Functional Skills Level 1 qualification.

Pathway C
This curriculum is largely based on the use of mathematical skills in real-life situations. Students on this course will be developing basic mathematical skills and knowledge that will be useful to them during and beyond their time in school. Students on this pathway can go on to achieve an Entry Level Certificate at level 1, 2 or 3.
