Mathematics

At Maplewell Hall School we believe in careful curriculum planning, which dynamically adheres to students’ needs, is the basis of solid student progress. We streamline this through three pathways which are outlined below, however this differs from year to year as we mould our curriculum to our specific cohort of students.

Year 7 students are assessed on arrival to ensure they are placed on the correct pathway for their ability and needs.

Students will be assessed at the end of each topic of study on content taught throughout that topic. Students will also be assessed at the end of each full term on a mix of topics covered up to that point.

All of our qualifications (GCSE, Entry Level Certificate) will be taught and assessed in line with the AQA examination board.

MAP – Stretch and Challenge

7MAP – Initially students will focus on developing skills in number, place value, addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Also covered in this year are topics such as perimeter, time and measurements. The curriculum is taught with a strong emphasis on reasoning and problem solving to strengthen these skills.

8MAP – Students will begin to study topics which will underpin their journey towards GCSE mathematics, this will include an introduction to algebra. They will be learning skills that will be progressively built upon throughout their time at Maplewell Hall School and will give them the tools to begin GCSE level content in year 9.

9MAP – Students will be starting a 3-year GCSE scheme of work which they will continue throughout the remaining time in KS3 and KS4. The topics taught will be directly linked to topics covered in the GCSE and will begin a foundation that can be built upon and developed over the coming years. These scheme of work has been designed to give students more learning time in each topic area to allow for mastery learning to take place.

10MAP – Students will be continuing with the 3-year GCSE pathway that they started in year 9, making this their second year working at GCSE level. All students will follow the Scheme of Work outlined below, which covers Foundation tier content. Some students will study additional content to prepare them for sitting the Higher tier at GCSE. They will continue to learn content from the Number, Algebra, Geometry and Ratio & Proportion strands, but will also be introduced to Statistics and Probability. As with the previous year, more time has been given to each topic area to allow for mastery learning to take place.

11MAP (Foundation) – Students will be continuing on the 3-year GCSE Pathway for the final year.  All students will follow the Scheme of Work outlined below, which covers Foundation tier content. Students will continue to learn content from all branches of the National Curriculum for Mathematics. Students will be given time at the end of the year to revise and prepare for examination, but are also encouraged to do so at home – this revision should be ongoing, throughout the year.

11MAP (Higher) – Selected students will be studying towards the Higher Tier GCSE in Mathematics. This is a demanding course which will cover advanced content designed to stretch and challenge the students in their deeper mathematical understanding, as well as encourage them to become more independent learners.

Pathway A – Stretch and Challenge

7A – Initially students will focus on developing skills in number, place value, addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Also covered in this year are topics such as perimeter, time and measurements. The curriculum is taught with a strong emphasis on reasoning and problem solving to strengthen these skills.

8A – In their second year at Maplewell Hall School, students delve deeper into the topics covered in year 7 to broaden their understanding and application of the skills they’ve learned. This cyclic approach allows for our philosophy of mastery teaching to be effectively delivered.

9A – Students will be starting a 3-year GCSE scheme of work which they will continue throughout the remaining time in KS3 and KS4. The topics taught will be directly linked to topics covered in the GCSE and will begin a foundation that can be built upon and developed over the coming years. These scheme of work has been designed to give students more learning time in each topic area to allow for mastery learning to take place.

10A – Students will be continuing with the 3-year GCSE pathway that they started in year 9, making this their second year working at GCSE level. All students will follow the Scheme of Work outlined below, which covers Foundation tier content. Some students will study additional content to prepare them for sitting the Higher tier at GCSE. They will continue to learn content from the Number, Algebra, Geometry and Ratio & Proportion strands, but will also be introduced to Statistic. As with the previous year, more time has been given to each topic area to allow for mastery learning to take place.

11A – Students will be continuing on the 3-year GCSE Pathway for the final year.  All students will follow the Scheme of Work outlined below, which covers Foundation tier content. Students will continue to learn content from all branches of the National Curriculum for Mathematics and be introduced to the Probability branch. Students will be given time at the end of the year to revise and prepare for examination, but are also encouraged to do so at home – this revision should be ongoing, throughout the year.

Pathway B – Step up to Independence

7B – Students will follow a scheme of work that is heavily focused on developing their skills in number. This will include topics like place value, addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. This curriculum is targeted to improve the students’ understanding of numbers and their uses.

8B – Students skills in number topics will continue to be refined and their understanding of how number is used will be strengthened. Students will revisit topics covered in year 7 at a deeper level to ensure they are progressing in these topics.

9B – Students will continue on their spiral curriculum by revisiting topics from years 7 and 8 but continuing to deepen their understanding and develop their skills.

10B - Students will be entered onto the AQA Entry Level Certificate qualification course, which lasts for 2 years. This course is largely based on the use of mathematical skills in real-life situations. Students on this course will be developing basic mathematical skills that will be useful to them during and beyond their time in school.

11B – Students will continue to work towards their Entry Level Certificate qualification. This course is largely based on the use of mathematical skills in real-life situations. Students on this course will be developing basic mathematical skills that will be useful to them during and beyond their time in school.

Pathway C – Learning for Life

7C – Students will follow a scheme of work that is heavily focused on developing their skills in number. This will include topics like place value, addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. This curriculum is targeted to improve the students’ understanding of numbers and their uses. They will also delve into functional skills such as the use of money, time and measures.

8C - Students will continue follow a scheme of work that is heavily focused on developing their skills in number. This will include topics like place value, addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. This curriculum is targeted to improve the students’ understanding of numbers and their uses.

9C - Students skills in number topics will continue to be refined and their understanding of how number is used will be strengthened. Students will revisit topics covered in years 7 and 8 at a deeper level to ensure they are progressing in these topics.
