Art and Design

Maplewell Hall School has a designated Art and Design room that has a wealth of resources to promote creativity and development of skills. Within the subject pupils will cover the following skills:

  • Research and analysis
  • Idea development and evaluation
  • Model making in a variety of materials
  • Fine art
  • ICT
  • Social skills and communication
  • Fine and gross motor skills development.

Within the subject pupils are encouraged to work independently so that they are able to build a wealth of skills in preparation for Key stage 4 when they can choose the subject as a GCSE option. All pupils created a range of fantastic sketch book work and outcomes that can be regularly viewed around the school.

Projects are based around pupil interest, along with projects that engage them in understanding Art influences from around the world. We use a range of activities and techniques that show pupil understanding and influences from inspiration around them.

Year 7

  • Pupils complete a competition project based on our local Lions topic
  • Pupils use a range of printing methods based on natural forms
  • Pupils create a clay fish based on inspiration from the library and cartoons
  • Pupils research African masks and create their own mask
  • Pupils research O’Keefe and Van Gogh and use a range of skills to show how the artists inspire them
  • Pupils will complete art projects in the outside grounds of the school.

Year 8

  • Pupils complete a competition project based on our local Lions topic
  • Pupils study aboriginal art by creating various landscape outcomes
  • Pupils study Picasso and use this method to create a super hero
  • Pupils study Matisse and use this to inspire a sea life project
  • Pupils study local landmarks, Old John and other projects, and create a variety of outcomes
  • Pupils will complete art projects in the outside grounds of the school.

Year 9

  • Pupils complete a competition project based on our local Lions topic
  • Pupils research Pop art and create a 3D modroc project
  • Pupils use silk, batik and screen printing based on animals
  • Pupils create a fantasy sculpture using modroc
  • Pupils still the grounds and building features of Maplewell and use a range of painting methods to recreate them
  • Pupils complete a research project inspired by their own choice artist.

Year 10

Pupils can opt to choose Art and Design at key stage 4. The pupils complete a GCSE in Art and Design. They complete a range of skills and projects in the following mediums:

  • Fine Art studies
  • Textiles work
  • Graphic design
  • 3D modelling using modroc, clay and papers
  • A choice of painting techniques
  • Use of ICT to complete research and analysis
  • Ideas development through experimentation and drawing
  • Printing techniques.

Pupils are expected to show:

  • A range of skills and techniques
  • A full course work project that includes research, analysis, ideas development, experimentation and a final outcome.

Pupils then have to choose an exam topic set by the exam board. They then complete:

  • Coursework including research, analysis, ideas development, experimentation and a final outcome
  • A final outcome that is created during a 2 day practical exam.

Key stage 5

Pupils get to opt once again for Art if they stay on in key stage 5. They complete a range of projects, including outcomes that can be sold through an enterprise project.

  • Urban art that includes fashion design and graffiti art
  • Winter landscapes using a range of fine art methods
  • Music and art inspired pieces that includes using observational drawing
  • Japanese art research, printing and manga based work
  • Surrealism study and outcomes based in pupil preferred medium
  • A final own choice project where pupils can develop their skills further in their own preferred techniques/methods.
